Candlesticks and Visions I

After the vision of Anne had left, Thad continued to dust and polish the stone mantle. He began to dust the top.

On the top were a few items of interest: two candle sticks, a picture frame with a picture of Anne, a small Celtic cross made of silver on a fine silver chain and an old brass key. Considering the level of mystic vision other simple items in the room had brought Thad, was a little hesitant to examine these items further. Seeing also though how dusty and tarnished the candlesticks were, he could not resist but to pick one up to work on it.

The candlestick was heavy, very heavy. As he polished the candlestick, he was sure that it was made of gold. The shape was most peculiar. The top was ringed in little golden barbs, like thorns. At three places along the base it seemed to have golden spikes driven through it. As he turned it over to polish the bottom he saw a little keyhole. This is a most curious thing to find on the bottom of a candlestick. Nevertheless, Thad picked up the small key and tried it in the lock on the candlestick. A small door opened in the bottom of the candlestick. Thad looked in.

Inside he saw the inside of a large stone church. Sitting in one of the pews was a much younger version of himself. He seemed to be deep in meditation. There was someone else there, someone trying to talk to him. He could see that he really would like to be left alone but was too polite to inform this intruder of this. As Thad watched, he was amazed to see angelic creatures hovering over the young Thad. Every now and then one or two would come down and float through Thad. The young Thad seemed to take on the appearance of these heavenly creatures. If holiness can be seen it was to be seen in the young Thad in the candlestick.

Much to the observing Thad's surprise, young Thad turned to face him. He approached the small opening in the candlestick until only his face could be seen.
"Why did you fall asleep? Why did you fail?" asked the young Thad.
Thad immediately closed the door on the candlestick and out it hastily down on the mantle.
